The main character Tally has a best friend who is named Peris. Peris just turned 16 and is now in the new pretty town and not ugly anymore while Tally still has 3 more months until she isn't ugly anymore. Now that Peris is not ugly anymore, the two bestfriends won't live in the same town and be able to see eachother for another 3 months. Tally doesn't want to accept the fact that she won't be able to see her bestfriend so she took a risk to go find Peris in the new pretty town dressed and looked like a pig so people won't notice her. If a ugly gets caught in the new pretty town there are many consequences. After being in the town, everyone noticed her dressed like a pig so she decides to pull the fire alarm and jump off the side of the mansion so she won't get caught. After Tally jumped off of the side of the mansion she saw cops everywhere and decided to stay in a garden before crossing the bridge to get back to the ugly town without getting caught.

I like how you described the conflict Tally faced at the beginning. I think that Tally will have more problems in the future with Peris. I also think that Tally will not want to go to New Pretty Town later in the book.

The main character in "Uglies" is Tally who is 15 and lives in UglyVille. When you turn 16, you get plastic surgery and go live in New Pretty Town. Tally's best friend Peris, turned 16 and now lives in New Pretty Town. This is difficult for Tally, because her and Peris used to spend everyday together. Tally can't see Peris anymore and it was driving her crazy. So, one night she sneaked out of Uglyville to go and try and find Peris in New Pretty Town. It is difficult for an "ugly" to go where the "pretties" are, because it is not allowed. When Tally was in New Pretty Town she almost got caught many times. When Tally saw Peris she realized how much he has changed and it was hard for her.

I agree, it seemed like it was really hard for Tally to not live in the same town as Peris anymore. I wonder when Tally goes in to new pretty town, if she and Peris will become bestfriends again?

    2. I agree that it was hard for Tally to see that Peris turned pretty and pretty much forgot about her. I think Tally thought everything was going to go back to normal and he was going to want her to stay.

So the book starts of with the main character, Tally, who is an Ugly. She is depressed that her best friend, Peris, has grown to the age of being able to become a pretty. She is 3 months younger, and will wait those long months to become a pretty and be with him. Peris lives in New Pretty Town now, where all the pretties live. Uglies, such as Tally live in Ugly town. They are not allowed to be in Pretty Town until they come of age to become a pretty. They are beautiful, mesmerizing people who are surgically transformed into beautiful, big eyed, big lipped, supermodels. Tally is not like these people; she has squatty eyes, thin lips and ratty hair. She is however, incredibly smart. Peris and her used to go on expeditions together, sneaking into Pretty Town to watch and make fun of the beautiful, ditzy people. They would climb an old bridge to get over the river that divides the 2 towns. This division between beautiful and pretty will cause problems in the future because, not everyone can be beautiful, it takes away people's individuality and differences.

In the story Uglies when you turn 16 you get to get plastic surgery to become pretty. The main character is named Tally and she is going to turn 16 in the months she has a best friend named Peris who is already 16 so that means he already got plastic surgery . In the story Tallys bestfriend Peris turned 16 before her so he got pretty before her and moved to Pretty Town and forgot about her. Tally went to Pretty Town to meet him so she could see how he was doing because she couldn’t live another day without seeing him. She was trying to leave because he told her to come back when she was pretty, so she jumped off the side of the the building because the people already saw that she was ugly. On her way out she sounded the alarm and now she is in the run.

I like how you vividly described how badly she missed her best friend Peris. It would be good if you described Tally more instead of the story and what is happening. Good descriptions of the book though.

    3. I agree, because Tally was having a hard time because she wasn't living in uglyville with Peris anymore because he was old enough to move and she wasn't.

The main character is Tally she is about to turn 16 years old and you get past surgery when when your 16. Her Friend Peris is 16 and they both wanted to go to pretty town. But Tally had to go to uglyville because she wasn’t old enough yet. Everybody thought she was pretty but some people thought she was ugly she also tried to jump out the building because it was the only way out and people saw her face. she met a new friend name Shay and she wasn’t sure about if she wanted to be pretty or not. When Tally was new to pretty town people caught her a lot of times but when she started making friends it was different for her.

I like how you told the story of Tally , but I wish you described Tally herself more than the story. The insight into the rest of the book was very good.

I can make a text to self comparison to Tally when she says she’s scared of growing up. It’s a huge change after you turn pretty, similar to high schoolers going to college. It’s a life changing event that is a turning point from being a kid to an adult. Also, where I am at, Tally was just invited by Shay to run away with her forever to a place called the Smoke, where people never turn pretty and aren’t categorized by the way they look. David is someone who lives there who told Shay everything about the Smoke. I predict that Tally will choose to go with Shay, and leave eventually.

    1. I made a similar connection as far as transistioning goes, i compred mine to a middle school to highschool transformation, middleschoolers are often scared of what highschool has to offer and what things will be like once they enter, the same thing is happening with shay she doesnt want to turn into a pretty because it almost sounds like shes scared

I agree to your self comparison about Tally being scared to grow up because it is a huge turning point in your life. I also agree with your prediction. Now that Tally has a mission to go and find Shay before she can turn pretty, I think Tally will end up staying with Shay and not return to the city.

  7. In the book the book “uglies” i can make a text to self connection because the main charcters tally and peris have gone ther seperate ways ever since peris turned 16 and pretty, this is similar to a middle schooler going into highschool with a group of friends thinking that they will be freinds forever, this happened to my friend emma and i, we thought that wed be friends for all of highschool and we didnt even make it through freshman year because we choose two different paths, people evolve over time, my prediction is that shay will regret not wanting to turn into a pretty and that tally will become a pretty and leave shay.

I predict that Tally is not going to have surgery because she is not going to want to have it because she is different from others. Also, Shay and her won’t be friends anymore because of Tally not wanting to have surgery anymore. Then they will be mad at each other and they won’t even go to the smoke place anymore will people never turn pretty because Shay will be upset at her then I also think Peris will be upset too but wouldn't really care.

I disagree because Shay is the one who doesn’t want the surgery, not Tally. Also, They have an argument, but I don’t think they will stop being friends forever.

    2. I agree with you saying that Tally is going not be able to get her surgery. But i disagree with you when you said that shay and tally won’t be friends anymore because Tally wasn’t getting the surgery because Tally was the one that actually wanted the surgery.

I think that Tally won’t be able to get her surgery. Since Shay is always is pressuring Tally to break the rules and get caught. I think that Shay is going to leave Tally so she doesn’t have to turn pretty and move to pretty town and turn bland. I also think that if Tally gets her surgery Peris is not going acknowledge her he was just saying that they are going t be friends forever so she would leave him alone.

Now that shay has ran away Tally can't become pretty anymore until she helps find Shay. I predict, that Tally will end up not becoming pretty and will run away with Shay. Tally promised Shay that she wouldn't tell about Shay running away or about where She went and it doesn't seem like Tally is going to break the promise. If Tally doesn't run away with Shay then i think that Tally will end up telling the truth and help find Shay so she can become pretty and back to being best friends with Peris.

In the book Uglies I predicted that Shay would go and find David, since Shay and Tally could not find him when they were in the Ruins. I also predict that when Tally goes to get her operation that something will go wrong or that she will decide not to get it, and leave the city to go find Shay and David. One of the connections I made while reading was when Shay had to say goodbye to Tally, because she was leaving and it reminded me when I had to say goodbye to one of my friends.

In the book Uglies, when Tally explained the smell and what she saw in the smokes,it really made me visualize what she was seeing. When Tally said that the open fires dotted the valley, surrounded by small groups of people, with scents of wood smoke and with morning mist through the air this reminded me of summer, camping, and being at a bonfire.

I agree with you on how Tally described The Smoke that it was like Summer. I visualized The Smoke as a camp where people go over the Summer. At camps people are usually making a bonfire and just having fun.

In the book Uglies, Tally described The Smoke as a Valley that was mostly clear of forest. Tally described it as camping and a outdoor party with fire. I visualize The Smoke as this place where it's basically this huge valley with the open fires surrounding the valley. I picture everyone there is happy working their jobs and riding around on their hoverboard.

In Uglies, Tally describes the fields of white tiger orchids like a vast field of white flowers and I can easily visualize the field because its similar to a field of white flowers I saw in Germany. That field in Germany is automatically what I can picture when she talked about it with the rangers. Also, I can visualize the field of her jumping in the river to avoid getting burnt by the fire. I’ve seen a similar scene in a movie that makes me think of it when she jumps in.

In the book uglies, Tally described the pretties and how she looked. She was saying how she wanted to be as pretty as them and how it reminded her of how young she was and how she would never be able to be like them because they were pretty and she was considered an ugly. Also, I can visualize that It makes me think about how she is going to look like the other uglies because she talks about herself like she isn’t going to fit in with the pretties.

I think that when Tally was describing them, she didn’t mean that she’s too young and never will turn pretty. I think she was just saying she was scared of having a complication with the procedure. Everyone turns pretty when they turn 16. I think IF she turns pretty, she will realize she can finally fit in now.

    2. I disagree when you said that Tally said she was too young because she never said she was too young she said that she was excited about being pretty. I also visualize what she is going to look like if she ever turn pretty. I would want to look like Dorthy dandridge because she is beautiful.

In the book Uglies Tally described smoke as a Valley that was mostly clear forest. She also said it is like a camping site with groups of people that are the same. In my mind it makes me think that smoke is a big outdoor camp site where everyone hangs out in their own groups it is just like Pretty Town except everyone that is in the smoke is uglies that ran away.

I never thought of comparing the Smoke to Pretty town. The book, Uglies makes the towns seem like opposites, impossible to have similarities, but they do. That was a good observation and comparison of the two towns.

  18. Something that i couold visualize is the way pretty town looks, tally always describes it as if it were the most colorful beautiful place on earth, I imagine there being lots of fireworks and pretty buildings looking like castles with people walking aroun with huge smiles and everyone being happy birds chirping and the sun always being out with not a single cloud in the sky everyone being tall and skinny with large eyes perfect skin and nice teeth with not a care in the world.

I agree with Shay because not everyone has to be pretty because trying to fix yourself to be pretty can mess your face up sometimes. I disagree with Tally because she is trying to fit in because she wants to be pretty so bad but you don’t have to be pretty to fit in with people i think she should just agree with Shay and don’t worry how she looks because Shay is a good friend but Tally is so stuck up on how she wants to be pretty and not listening to Shay who doesn’t want her to get the surgery. I did agree with Tally at first because I can relate sometimes to her because everyone has those days were they think they are ugly but you don’t have to fix yourself because of what other people think of you and i feel like she could have solved her situation differently instead of wanting to get surgery.

Yes, I do agree that Shay was right in thinking some people are more beautiful being different. Flaws can be very beautiful. Although, I don’t think it would solve Tally’s problems if she ran away. Shay actually caused more problems by not wanting to turn pretty. Yes, being pretty might not be the better choice, but it’s the simpler choice.

    2. i understand what your saying as for as tally wanting to be pretty to fit in and that you dont want to be the odd one out, her want to be pretty is almost like an addiction its all she thinks about her every move is withthe thought of what a pretty would do, it makes you wonder if she content with her self because if she was she wouldnt want to be a pretty so bad

  20. I think that the world would be better if everyone was pretty because life is so much more simple becaue eveyone is pretty and gets to party all day and no one is judged by looks, you can have anything you want it seems; life is care free, at one point i agreed with both tally and shay, i understand where shay is coming from as far as losing your identity because when you become pretty you lose all sence of who you truly are, any kind of scars or anyhting bad is completley gone and your pretty much a plastic barbie doll just like when tally went to go visit her childhood friend peris and he was acting like a completely different person even the scar on his hand that they both had is gone, and thats just not realistic and its kind of sad because its almost putting out the idea that if you have to be pretty to be happy, but i also know where tally is coming from being pretty is great who wouldnt want to look amazing all the time, if you think about a time when you felt great about your self and had a great day doing things you enjoy to do, thats what being a petty is like and who wouldnt want to have that everyday youd feel never ending happiness.

I can relate when you said you can see both Shay, and Tally’s points of view. Yes, Shay is right that they strip your identity away from you when you turn pretty. Tally is also right though because a few weeks of pain from the operation is worth a lifetime of being happy and beautiful. I agree when you said beautiful people can be happier because all they do is party and have fun.

Before Tally and Shay went to the smoke i agreed with Tally. I think they should have just followed the rules because in the end their lifes would be good. They would be pretty, get to do alot more and everyone would be all together again and there wouldn't be as many problems. I think the world would be better if everyone was together no matter how they look and weren't separated because of their appearances . I think this because there wouldn't be as much arguing they wouldn't have to worry about people running away as much because they would have the option to do what they want. But I also kind of agreed with Shay at one point about going to the smoke. The smoke seems more of like a normal place rather than the city, everyone was together no matter how they looked and you have to do work to earn things and things seem way more fair. I think it was wrong for specials to punish Tally because of Shays choices. They should have just let Shay go because she obviously didn't want the surgery and she also thought the smoke was a better place.

I agree with you on that everyone's life would be a lot easier if everyone is pretty, and how no one would be left out. I feel like since everyone is pretty that the world would be really boring, and that Shay has a point that just staying yourself is a lot better than getting the surgery.

I agree with Shay on that this sort of surgery is dangerous to identify. The surgery is so risky, because you do not know what they are going to do to you. Everyone who gets the surgery are all so excited that they can finally be pretty now that they do not think about what could happen. If nobody got the surgery the world would be different again, and have diversity. There was a point in the story where I agreed with both Shay and Tally. I feel like Tally does have a point that it would just be easier if everyone was pretty and to just get the surgery. Tally wants to live in a world where everyone is the same, and no one would get judged by their looks. Shay has a better point that getting the surgery is taking away who you are and is making you become someone that your not. The surgery takes away everything that makes who you are and Shay makes sure Tally tries to understand that. While being pretty might bring you to feel better, but just staying who you are would be a lot better.

I agree with Shay also because the surgery does take away your actual identity away from you and thats not who you actually are. I also did agree with Tally at one point because they have been doing the surgery for so many years what could possibly go wrong? I think they should just live in a world where you aren't separate from everyone else just because of the way that you look and there wouldn't be anything to take your actual identity away from you.
